Speaker Nicola Atkinson

Nicola is Head of Learning and Development at Blake Dawson, one of the country's leading commercial law firms with a growing presence in the region. A lawyer and formerly a lecturer in an interdisciplinary environmental science program at Imperial College, London, Nicola has long been interested in how lawyers view the world and its impact on their learning throughout their careers. Involved in several major change projects in the firm since 2004, Nicola uses her role to focus on the power of learning interventions to facilitate change in organisation, particularly through language. Interactive multimedia represents a whole new set of challenges and opportunities for learning which the firm is currently embracing.

The Chrysalis Effect: A Retrospective on Work and Personal Transformation

Why you should listen to Nicola: Headliner Session:  Wed Sept 14, 2011    2:30pm - 2:45pm

Learning and Development departments typically see their roles as securing the organisation's success through fundamental and lasting change in the individual. This session surveys some of the "big ideas" that have informed learning strategies for lawyers at Blake Dawson over the past 10 years and considers their implications for the staff member in the workplace. More recently, research conducted with the University of Sydney has demonstrated the powerful effect of coaching to secure lasting change at the individual level. This session asks how we might build on those big ideas - and the availability of web 3.0 technologies - to better leverage this particular learning approach in the professional services environment of the future.
