            Powernote Session                      Day 1       June 9        4:15pm - 5pm
  Presenter -- Dr Helena Popovic
  The X Factor for Xcellence

The X Factor refers to the undefinable “something” that makes for star quality. Technical mastery of training skills is not enough to stand out and be truly memorable. Everyone in these highly competitive times is good. The X factor is about being Xtraordinary. The latest research in neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain to change itself in response to what we experience) now allows us to define the previously undefinable and to understand what it takes to achieve Xcellence – in training, in performance and in health.  We are far more than passive victims of our genes: we play an active role in how our brain develops throughout our entire life. By applying the X Factors, we all become uniquely Xtraordinary. Aristotle said “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act but a habit.” This dynamic presentation delivers the key habits of mind and body which allow us to Xperience Xcellence on a daily basis

  Frontliner Session                        Day 2      June 10       10:30am - 11:00am
Presenter -- Bruce Hilliard, Managing Director - Seahorses P/L and researcher at Murdoch University WA
Using Powerpoints® to enhance comprehension & shape impressions
(Applying biopsychological and psychophysical principles to enhance learning outcomes through the use of PowerPoint presentations)

Many books and other articles have been written on the application of tools like Microsoft PowerPoint. Some publications even explain general principles on the use of this tool to enhance education outcomes. However, experiments conducted in the scientific domains of psychophysics and biopsychology, have indicated that many of the more traditional PowerPoint design beliefs are actually counter-productive. Each of the practices developed from this research are easy-to-use, but they help to ensure that students understand the information being provided. Just as importantly, these techniques can positively motivate students about the subject, by shaping their impressions. You can therefore apply these practices to enhance comprehension, and positively influence students with your presentations. This presentation provides a brief overview of some really practical techniques that you can apply in PowerPoint, to improve learning outcomes.

  Learning Points
The techniques that will be covered are based on more than 15 years of research into:
--  the way visual information is handled within the brain; and
-- how this knowledge can be applied through the visual presentation of material, to enhance learning outcomes.
